Dear Family and Friends,

I am writing this letter to request your partnership in an upcoming ministry trip to  Nairobi Kenya with my church, CrossWay Christian Church.  We will travel to the slums of Nairobi in June/July and will be working with The Hope Partnership serving in the Mathare Valley slums.

The Mathare Valley slum is approximately 3 miles long and a half of a mile wide.  Roughly 1 million people live there.  They lack the basic necessities of life, including adequate housing, clean water, and sanitation services.   Educational opportunities are negligible.  Complicating the problem is that there are very few jobs to provide the income needed for families to improve their lives.  While many diseases are prevelant in the slums the effects of AIDS are devastating.  There are countless orphans and vulnerable children throughout the slums, where the infection rate approaches 40%.

The Hope Partnership serves the community in these ways:

1). Provides education, clothing and nutritious meals for the poorest children in the village

2). Teaches HIV/AIDS awareness and education, as well as information on caring for those living with this disease.

3). Sponsors a microenterprise loan program for launching small businesses.

4). Offers basic health and wellness education.

5). Plants churches, offers family counseling and religious education.

Here is the website for more information on our partner and the mission trip:  http://www.cmfhopepartnership.org/

We will be doing home visits in the community, installing skylights in shanties with no electricity, taking food to the sick, and teaching simple ways to live healthier and better.  I will be documenting the trip through photography.   You can see my images from my previous trip to Nairobi on my website: http://kymscottphotography.photoshelter.com/gallery/Kenya-2010/G0000pkfWOrjjdVk/.

I am wrting to ask for your support.  Please keep me and the team in prayer as we prepare and as we go.  Your prayers and encouragement mean a great deal to me.

If you are able, please consider supporting me financially as well.  The cost of this trip will be approximately $2,500-$3,000 per person for travel and expenses while in Kenya.  This certainly is a lot of money.  That is why I am asking for your partnership.  Whatever you feel led to contribute would be very appreciated.  No amount is too small (or too large  J).  If you would like more information, please feel free to contact me.  I would love to tell you more about our trip.

If you elect to support us financially, please make your check payable to CrossWay Christian Church and put “Africa 2011” in the memo line.  For tax deduction purposes, please do not place my name on the check.  Place the check in the envelope included with this letter and it will be credited appropriately (feel free to copy and paste this post into Word to print). Mail to:

Attention: Kenya 2011-Kym Scott

Please understand that all gifts toward Short-term Ministry Trip costs are non-refundable, and the church will make the final decision for allocating all donated amounts to each team member.  If for any reason a particular team member is not able to go on a trip, funds initially allocated to that team member will be used to support other costs of the ministry trip.

Even if you are not able to contribute financially, your prayers and encouragement are very appreciated.  Thanks so much for being a part of this adventure.

Sincerely,

Kym Scott

That is all.

Her name is Lucy.

She’s  a student in Mathare Valley

Village 2

Nairobi.

Our church raised money to get all the students new uniforms, socks and shoes.

I helped her into her new clothes.

She helped me into a smile.
